Tripura Descends Into Violence with BJP’s Take Over of the State

Seventee year old, Copious Debbrama’s anguished cry to the victorious politicians condoning violennce and arson: “Think of the students about to give exams!”

Over 20 locations in the tiny state of Tripura descended into violence and anarchy with the BJP’s defeat of the Left Front in Tripura. Facebook and social media are rife with such gory and bloody details. Many attacks, however, have gone unreported. In Jirania, a small town in Tripura, 2 people were killed (one woman died of explosion, other man chopped off), 60 activists were physically tortured, 400 houses were ransacked, looted, 5 houses gutted, 7 CPI(M) party office vandalised, 5 party offices gutted, 1 CITU, 1 DYFI office ransacked and 4 cars set on fire. This is not a one of or a unique attack. Attacks have been unleashed across the state by the BJP activists and cadre of the left activists and left spaces.

In Kamalpur, a Nagar panchayat in Dhalai district of Tripura, 19 people were physically tortured, 4 houses (including one of LC Secretary) was gutted, 200 houses were attacked and looted. Apart from this, 3 CPI(M) party offices were vandalised, 5 Trade Union offices were captured, 2 cars, 2 Battery Autos and 2 bikes of Motor workers broken.Such instances of violence were reported from a total of about 20 places from across the state.

Tripura is Burning: Pictures tell the story says an impassioned post, on Facebook, by Copious Debbarma, a 3rd year student of Human Physiology Honours at MBB college, who has updated photographs of the arson and violence Tripura, with the following message:

“I Want to request to all the political Leaders who won the election to control their supporters to stop the violence, burning houses, many kids of those families are going to appear 10th, 12th exam, it seems some of them lost their admit cards, books …. How will they face the exam?? Please think about those people …..”
