Speak out against the politics of hate: JJM

Tribal rights group condemns the communal attacks and attacks on Muslims in Jharkhand and India alike

Hate

Condemning the recent communal attacks against Muslims, the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha (JJM) on April 21, 2022 called upon all citizens and non-BJP parties to unite against the communal hate spreading across India.

“This year, on the occasion of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, many incidents of communal attacks on Muslims came forward. Be it Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone, Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, Karnataka or Jharkhand’s Lohardagah and Koderma, a religious animosity and complicity of the police and administration was apparent. The JJM condemns this violence against Muslims and the RSS Hindutva agenda,” said the tribal rights group in a press release.

In light of these attacks, the JJM demanded that the state government take action against these violent elements as well as the police officials that failed to act against them. It also demanded due compensation to the aggrieved families. Moreover, they demanded an assurance from the police that they will protect the people and minorities against any such attacks in the future.

“Chief Minister Hemant Soren must keep the state from becoming a ‘torture lab’ against minority groups, like those seen in BJP-ruled states,” said the JJM.

Similar groups also met during a joint meeting on April 19 wherein people took stock of the various forms of hate in recent days. Particularly in Lohardagah, members recollected how an Aman Ansari was lynched during the attack. In most places members of the victim community were arrested. JJM condemned the Koderma police for silently watching as miscreants brandishing saffron flags and verbally abused Muslim youths in a local market. Similarly in Khargone, a bulldozer crushed the Muslim community’s houses. As for Jahangirpuri, the bulldozers continued their rampage despite an order from the Supreme Court, April 20.

“In the name of food, attire (hijab, beard), gau-rakshak, creation of ‘one nation, one language’, they are forcing the economic boycott of Muslims and criminalisation of reading namaz. In line with the narrow concept of a Hindu nation, they are treating minorities, adivasis and Dalits as second-hand citizens. Every day attacks on democracy and the Constitution by the BJP and RSS continue,” said the JJM.

Regarding Jharkhand, the group lamented that despite a non-BJP government, there is no attempt to curb this violence. Non-BJP groups remain mum on the topic. Instead, the rights group appealed to people and organised groups alike to come together and fight the politics of hate.
