Irish human rights organisation Front Line Defenders and Trinity College Dublin’s ‘Centre for Resistance Studies’ announced an at-home screening of the ‘Nasrin’ documentary film on March 9, 2021.
Narrated by Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman and secretly filmed in Iran by women and men who risked arrest, the film follows the work and life of renowned human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh.
The Iranian human rights defender has long fought for the rights of women, children, religious minorities, journalists and artists, and those facing the death penalty. Nasrin has been repeatedly targeted for her work and received an 11-year prison sentence for “spreading propaganda” and “conspiring to harm the state,” in 2010. She was later released and again arrested in June 2018 for representing women who publicly protest Iran’s mandatory hijab laws.
Following her recent sentence of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes, Nasrin continues to challenge authorities from her prison cell and even launched a hunger strike to protest against the poor health conditions and the risk of Covid-19 in prisons.
Following early viewing, Canadian poet and activist Margaret Atwood said, “Nasrin Sotoudeh is an extraordinarily brave woman. I urge you to see this timely and important film!”
The viewing will be followed by a panel discussion with Director Jeff Kauffman and Producer Marcia Ross, United Nations Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor, Iranian activist and Nasrin’s husband Reza Khandan, Iranian women’s human rights defender Mahdieh Golrou and women and LGBTQI rights defender Rezvaneh Mohammadi.
The in-depth discussion will focus on the situation of women human rights defenders in the country, the risks they are facing and their incredible resilience. The panel will be introduced by Trinity College Dublin’s Dr. Roja Fazaeli and moderated by Executive Director of Front Line Defenders Andrew Anderson.
The talk will be live streamed via the Front Line Defenders’ Facebook and YouTube channels while the documentary will be available via Video on Demand on iTunes or Apple from March 8.
