Muslim man in critical condition after being beaten by a mob in Bokaro, Jharkhand

In another incident of mob violence against minorities in Jharkhand, Mohammed Shakir, a Muslim working in the Kathara town of Bokaro district was severely beaten by a mob which accused him of eve teasing a Hindu girl. His condition is said to be critical.

Shakir, who runs a shop of printing ‘Aadhar’ cards, was about to open his shop on Tuesday morning when a mob of about 50 people attacked him. According to the mob, Shakir had been eve-teasing a Hindu girl. Shakir was left unconscious by the mob and all his clothes were torn. He was taken to Bokaro General Hospital, where he is said to be fighting for his life.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a FIR against Heera Lal, and Mantu Yadav along with 15 other unnamed individuals, although no arrest has been made in the case.

Shakir’s family is frightened to talk to anyone. When activists and this reporter tried to reach them, their calls went unanswered. However, after several attempts, Shakir’s brother spoke with Nadeem Khan, an activist from Delhi. Shakir’s brother Shamim Khan has termed the incident as a hate crime and is yet to understand what led to such a gruesome attack on his brother.
