On May 7, 2022 a 30-year-old Dalit sanitation worker named Krishna Palaram Tusamad was reportedly beaten to death by the factory owner of imitation ornaments in Bhayander region of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Krishna, who worked at the factory, died by the time he was taken to the hospital.

As per media reports, the victim’s hands and legs were tied and he was brutally beaten with an iron rod crushing his face and torso. According to reports, the police have arrested the accused factory owner without invoking the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) brought Tusamad’s tragic story to light in a Facebook post alleging that though local police have arrested the factory owner “they have not included the provisions of SC ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. No government official visited the family so far or attended the funeral!”

DYFI, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and working president of the CITU-affiliated Safai Shramik Union, made the following demands in a letter to the Chief Minister:

1) Add provisions of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the case.

2) Ensure efficient, flawless and speedy Police investigation.

3) Fast track the trial and see to it that all the perpetrators get the severest punishment.

4)Provide immediate financial relief to the victim’s helpless family.

CPI(M), Safai Shramik Union, Jaati Ant Sangharsh Samiti and the wider democratic collective of Mumbai, seek immediate and effective intervention from the highest levels of government in Maharashtra.
