Maharashtra Gram Panchayat passes resolution against CAA-NRC-NPR

Islak becomes first village to pass such a resolution in the country

On January 26, Republic Day, Islak, a sleepy little village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra became an inspiration for the rest of the country by passing a resolution of non-cooperation with the processes and procedures related Ctitizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

The village located in the Nagar taluka has a population of around 2000 people who are engaged in agriculture. The resolution was passed during a Gram Panchayat meeting held on Republic Day and signed by the Sarpanch Babasaheb M Gerange and Dy Sarpanch Amol Chimaji Shinde.

Gerange told Times of India, “There are people residing here for generations, but till today, they neither have any document nor any piece of land to prove their existence.” Gerange also said that there were no Muslim households in the village.
