An assistant professor teaching at Punjab’s Lovely Professional University (LPU) has been sacked for a purported audio of her opinion on the Hindu deity Ram. LPU is a private university in Chaheru, Phagwara, Punjab. It is led by Ashok Mittal who diversified into education from its original sweets business. Mittal, is also one of the Rajya Sabha members from Punjab nominated by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

According to a report in Indian Express, Mittal family which set up LPU in 2005, holds most of the senior posts in the university. “Ashok Mittal became the chancellor and his wife Rashmi Mittal was appointed the co-chancellor” of the university that is built over 600 acres, and has “more than 30,000 students” and over “3,000 faculty and staff members.”

Now it has sacked one of them and put out a public statement that the views “shared by one of our faculty members are absolutely personal and the university does not endorse any of them.”

According to the LPU “We have always been a secular university, where people from all religions and faith are treated equally with love and respect. She has been relieved from the services with immediate effect. However, we deeply regret this whole incident.”

According to news reports, the professor Gursang Preet Kaur has been accused of using derogatory words against the Hindu god Ram and praising his adversary Ravan. She was sacked soon after the audio, purportedly a recording of her opinion, perhaps in conversation or discussion surfaced on social media on Saturday. The entire right-wing ecosystem then stepped into high gear and the demand that she be sacked reached a crescendo. University vice-president Aman Mittal told the media that the assistant professor was sacked on Saturday itself.
