The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020 was promulgated by the state’s Governor on November 28 and no sooner than the law was in place, two cases have already been registered under it. One case was registered on November 29 while the other on November 30.

The first FIR was filed by Tikaram against a youth named Uwaish Ahmed at the Deorania Police station. He has alleged that Ahmed knew his daughter since they were students and recently had started pressuring her to convert to Islam. He further alleged that Ahmed had verbally abused her and even threatened to kill her. The FIR was accordingly filed under the new ordinance which penalises forceful religious conversion. The police are still trying to apprehend Ahmed

The second FIR has been filed against a man identified as Tahir Hussain and his brothers, Sagir and Munna at Izzat Nagar police station, as reported by Hindustan Times. As per the FIR, the woman got married to Tahir Hussain in a temple and when she became pregnant, she insisted on registration of marriage and when she kept urging family members for the same, Hussain and his brother assaulted her, resulting in an abortion. It has been alleged that Hussain told her that he did not want to marry her, but that he believed in “love jihad” and getting a Hindu girl pregnant. The victim alleged that Hussain lured her by promising to marry her, but continued to rape her, the FIR said, as reported by HT.
