In a welcome development, two prominent Mosques in downtown Srinagar, at the Friday sermons yesterday (Khutba, Jumma kee Namaaz) publicly urged and appealed to the moral and religious duty of Srinagar (and the Valley’s) Muslims to protect the lives of Kashmiri Pandit minorities/Sikhs who did not leave Valley in the 1990s! This was a direct and immediate response to the fervent and courageous appeal made by Sanjay Tickoo on October 7, to the majority in the Valley to speak up for the minorities. Speaking to Sabrangindia, Sanjay Tickoo who himself is a target for militants and terrorists, said that the sermon specifically also appealed to the immediate neighbours of the downtown Srinagar locality where he resides to protect him and others. In every Village of Kashmir, Srinagar, cities, the Muslim neighbour must become a stoic voice of courage and protection for Kashmir’s Minorities. Both Mosques in downtown Srinagar were clear and strong in the Friday sermon:: the voice of reason and humanity wins, slowly and surely over the gun. and bigotry.

This marks a huge breakthrough in intra-community relations markedly different from the situation in the 1990s.
