JAI SHREE RAM

Around 11.30 PM on Saturday night, two men riding a motorcycle began harassing a Muslim couple waiting at a bus stop, insisting they chant 'Jai Shri Ram'. One of the men also allegedly flashed the woman. However, this enraged bystanders who then thrashed the accused and handed them over to police.

“When one of the men flashed before the woman, the onlookers intervened and called the police. The two men were handed over to Kotwali police. We arrested them after recording the couple’s statement,” Chauthmal Verma, station house officer of Alwar Mahila Thana, told Hindustan Times.

The accused have been identified as Vansh Bhardwaj (23) and Surendra Mohan Bhatia (32). The police also conducted a medical examination of the accused, which revealed Bhatia was in a drunken state during the incident. Alwar police on Sunday arrested them under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 A (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt ), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 509. The complaint was filed at a women’s police station and the accused were produced before a judge and remanded to judicial custody.
