TRADE UNION STRIKE: JNU CONTRACTUAL WORKERS ON STRIKE IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE FASCIST ATTACK ON LABOUR RIGHTS

September 02, New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday witnessed a massive strike by hundreds of contractual workers in solidarity with the All India General Strike called by Central Trade Unions and Workers Federations. The strike by JNU workers belonging to All India General Kamgar Union (affiliated to AICCTU) paralysed the general services in the varsity with mess, sanitation, horticulture and other services coming to a complete halt. 1.5 million Workers in India employed in various organised and unorganised sectors are on strike against the fascist attack on labour right, and the vicious entry of foreign multinationals through opening up of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in core sectors. Terming the opening up of FDI as a move towards privatisation, trade unions have warned the government not to interfere with the rights of the workers. The unions also demanded an increase of the minimum wages to INR 18000.

In JNU, speaking to the striking workers the general secretary of AICCTU Delhi unit Comrade Santosh Rai called the ‘increase’ of minimum wage to INR 350 per day by the government “a farce and an attempt to fool the workers”. He also reiterated the failures of the neo liberal economic policies that have made working class to strive for their day to day survival. He also mentioned the opposition voices against the then Narasimha Rao government against the implementation of these policies. Mr. Rai in his speech pressed upon the fact of the demolition of the Babri masjid which was a desperate attempt to divide the united form of struggles of the working class.

Comrade Sanjay, the General Secretary of AIGKU JNU unit asked the workers to stay united against the onslaught on workers in JNU by the administration at the behest of RSS backed Union government.  Thanking the JNU workers and students for standing in solidarity with the strike called by the central trade unions, Comrade Anju the Vice President of AIGKUJNU Unit spoke about the problems faced by sanitation workers in JNU who have to work in degrading and inhuman conditions and, are forced to clean without any protective gears.

“Our fight will continue till basic working rights  in JNU are meet and we will standing in solidarity with struggling workers around the world” said Comrade Urmila the President of the AIGKU JNU Unit. Harish, a contact workers employed in the sanitation thanked the struggle initiated by JNU  workers and the union in elimination of manual scavenging in the campus and in ensuring the dignity of workers. The workers also reiterated their solidarity to the student movement in JNU that is facing massive repression from Modi led government.

The All India strike has instilled a fear among the corporate class and the government with the administration in many industrial areas deploying paramilitary forces and taking out flag marches to terrorise the workers. Despite these repressive measures by the state, workers have brought the country to a halt with many sectors witnessing a complete shutdown. The workers and the trade union has once again showed with the successful strike that the workers are the stakeholders in the progress of the country and its people and their rights can't be ignored. The workers will stand against the corporate fascist policies of the government which is playing anti labour and communal politics to divide the people. The contractual workers in JNU along with students presented revolutionary salute to all workers in India who stood against the state repression and ensured a successful strike.
